Soccer action is Europe has wrapped up for the season, with the European Cup over and the top leagues in their offseason. However, in North America, the second half of the Major League Soccer season is underway, with plenty of exciting matches this week as teams fight for positioning.
A pair of clubs looking to make a run up the tables in their respective divisions face off Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Galaxy take to the road to face the Columbus Crew. Sitting in fifth place in the western conference, the Galaxy and slowly trying to gain ground on the rest of the table after a terrible start to the season. They have 36 points through 25 games, and are just one point behind third and fourth place Seattle and Vancouver.
After winning the championship, they are in danger of missing the playoffs, something they can point to their defense and goaltending for. They have given up 39 goals this season, which is most in the west and third most in the league overall. Of the 39, 23 have come on the road where they have lost six games all season.
They will visit a Columbus Crew club that has also struggled this season after a successful campaign last year. They are in 7th place at the moment in the east, but have played only 20 games as every other team has played between 24 and 26. So, despite their eight wins and 28 points, they have a good opportunity to move up the table.
The Galaxy are concluding a road trip in Columbus, playing their fourth straight on the road. They won a pair of matches, shutting out Dallas and Chivas, but in between they fell to Seattle 4-0. They will look forward to an extended home stand after playing Columbus, which will be their seventh road game in eight matches.
Columbus, meanwhile, will return home after a pair of road matches, splitting their short trip with a win and a loss.
Betting lines: The Galaxy will get a slight boost despite playing on the road, but Columbus at home has done well this year. They are not as bad as their standings suggest, and will be facing a tired Los Angeles club looking to get home. The Crew come out on top in a high scoring match, 3-2.
