Soccer action is Europe has wrapped up for the season, with the European Cup over and the top leagues in their offseason. However, in North America, the second half of the Major League Soccer season is underway, with plenty of exciting matches this week as teams fight for positioning.
This Friday night featured a very exciting eastern conference primetime match up, as the two top clubs face off looking to take over first place and sit atop the table. The surging Houston Dynamo will host the New York Red Bulls, and a win by the home team will put them in first place for the first time this season.
The Dynamo have been moving up the table steadily of late, sitting now in second position with 10 wins and 37 points, in a statistical tie with Sporting Kansas City. The New York Red Bulls remain in first place for now, with just one more win and only one more point. All three clubs have played 22 matches, and all three will be contenders for the top spot for the remainder of the season.
The difference for Houston this season has been their excellent play on home field. They started off the season with a lengthy road trip as they awaited for their brand new stadium to be completed, and since they had a chance to play there, they’ve been unstoppable.
The Dynamo are just one of two teams who have yet to lose at home all season –the other is New York, and Houston will look for their eighth home win of the year this weekend. They have outscored their opponents 19-7 at home this year, and come into this match with a four game winning streak and a seven game unbeaten streak.
After beating TFC in Toronto 2-0 this past weekend, the Dynamo have continued their shutout streak, having not allowed a goal in two matches, and allowing just one to Kansas City in their past six games.
The Red Bulls meanwhile will try and rebound from a road loss to Montreal, their sixth away defeat of the year. They have won just four times on the road.
Betting lines: At home, Houston is the clear favourite. They are fantastic at home, and the Red Bulls have struggled away from home. The Dynamo shut out New York, winning 2-0 and taking over first place in the east.
