Soccer action is Europe has wrapped up for the season, with the European Cup over and the top leagues in their offseason. However, in North America, the second half of the Major League Soccer season is underway, with plenty of exciting matches this week as teams fight for positioning.
Two of the top teams in the west do battle Friday night in primetime, as Real Salt Lake hosts Vancouver Whitecaps as both clubs look to gain points and make a playoff push. Sitting in second place in the west, Salt Lake has 12 wins and 39 points, five points back of the first place San Jose Earthquakes.
In third place, though far back, sits the Vancouver Whitecaps, who have eight wins and 32 points. While they are looking up to catch Salt Lake, they are also looking behind, as Seattle Sounders FC and Los Angeles Galaxy sit back in fourth and fifth just one and two points back respectively.
The two clubs will face off in Salt Lake, where Real has eight wins, one draw, and three losses on the season. At home they have outscored their opponents by a 21-11 margin, and have won two straight. In their last three home games, Real has not allowed a goal, outscoring their opponents 5-0 in that span.
They will host a Vancouver club that has struggled on the road, earning just three wins and three draws to go with five losses. They take to the road after playing two at home, having completed a five game road trip just prior, a stretch that saw them lose three matches, win one, and draw one. In that span, the Whitecaps scored just three goals while allowing seven.
Both clubs are coming off home victories, and the two will meet again after a short break in Vancouver in a couple weeks.
Betting lines: At home, Real Salt Lake is the clear favourite and rightly so. Vancouver has played well this year, but western clubs have a strong home field advantage and tend to be weaker on the road due to the extensive traveling. Salt Lake will continue their strong play at home, and earn another victory, beating Vancouver 2-0.
