Chelsea vs Inter Milan

Location: San Siro, Milan, Italy

Kick-Off: Wednesday, February 24, 2:45 PM ET

Chelsea

Chelsea is the US sportsbook (US sportsbook review) favorite in England, and now they move onto a crucial Champions League tie with Inter. Chelsea romped to the top of Group D with four wins and a pair of draws during the group stages, and Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba each had three goals despite playing just four of the six matches. Only captain John Terry has played all six matches, and he’ll play again on Wednesday with all of Chelsea’s injury worries. Frank Lampard looks to have the best chance to make this game with a virus, but it’s unlikely that Alex, Deco, Michael Essien and Jose Bosingwa will feature.

Inter Milan

The Italian champions finished second to Barca in Group F of the group stages, with two wins, three draws and a loss. Dejan Stankovic has a pair of goals in five Champions League matches, but Samuel E’to, who came from Barca in a swap for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has just one goal in six matches. Word emerged out of Italy that their striker misses life at Barca, but there’s nothing that winning won’t fix. Mario Balotelli and Davide Stanton may have to miss this game through injury, but Inter is plowing through Serie A because they have depth.

Outlook and Pick

Inter is a +176 sports betting favorite, while Chelsea comes in at +196, and a draw is listed at +220.  There will be a lot of attention paid to this particular tie, as Inter manager Jose Mourinho led Chelsea to many honors in England, but it was his inability to win the Champions League that hastened his exit from London. Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is the fourth manager to roam the sidelines at Stamford Bridge since 2007, is very familiar with Inter and the San Siro, as he managed at AC Milan from 2001 until just last year, so he’ll be able to give his team some insider’s insight as to the hostile environment they will face in Milan on Wednesday. Both teams are very strong going forward and at the back, and Chelsea is essentially the same team they were when Mourinho was at Stamford Bridge. Inter has scored just one goal in their last three matches, and they may feel the effects of having to play the last 50 minutes of their 0-0 draw with Sampdoria on Sunday with nine men after Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba were sent off. The red cards won’t transfer to the Champions League, but how will the extra space they had to cover affect the rest of the Inter players? Meanwhile, Chelsea strolled to a 2-0 win at Wolves and should be fresher.
