This weekend features a full slate of soccer action, with the top leagues around Europe playing, and Premiership action in full swing. One of the hottest teams in the league, Newcastle, looks to continue their second half surge up the table and move closer to the top tier as they travel to Fulham to take on the Cottagers.
After stumbling in the late fall, Newcastle looks to have returned to their winning ways that defined them so early in the season. They were one of the last teams in the league to suffer a loss, but once that defeat came, they were unable to get back on track. Now, however, Newcastle United have moved up to sixth position and are knock on the door of the top tier of clubs.
Through 21 matches they have earned 10 wins and six draws, good for 36 points; just as many as fifth place Arsenal. Just ahead of both clubs sits Chelsea within reach at 40 points. Behind Newcastle, however, sits Liverpool with 35 points, another club that has been experiencing a surge of late.
Newcastle take to the road where they have four wins, three draws, and only three losses. They have scored as many goals as they have allowed: 14. They have, however, lost three of their last five on the road, winning just once.
Part of their recent surge, however, which has seen them win three of four, is their defense and goalkeeping. In those three wins they did not allow a single goal. Yet, in their last three losses, they allowed a total of 10 goals.
Their opponent this week is Fulham, a club sitting in 14th position with 23 points sitting amid many other inconsistent clubs. A win could move them up a few spots, but a loss could see others pass them as they slip dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Of their five wins on the season, four have come at home. They have scored 16 goals while allowing 15 playing in Fulham. They are coming off a 3-1 road loss to lowly Blackburn, but have won three of their last four at home, outscoring their opponents by a combined 5-1.
Betting lines: On the road Newcastle is the favourite and rightly so. They are surging while Fulham is inconsistent. Newcastle should win easily as they look to move into the top tier of clubs.
