Liverpool vs Manchester City
Location: City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester, England
Kick-Off: Sunday, February 21, 10:00 AM ET
Liverpool
The Reds’ bookmaker odds (bookmaker review) are hanging on by a thread, and it’s been their defense that is keeping Liverpool in the game. Liverpool has allowed just one goal in five matches ahead of their Europa League match against Unirea Urziceni of Romania on Wednesday, and Jamie Carragher has played much better after a shaky start to the season. The Reds haven’t had much luck up front with their attacking players, as Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun have been hurt, and Steven Gerrard hasn’t been quite himself this season. Strangely, Liverpool has been getting their goals from an unlikely source: Dirk Kuyt has scored four goals in his last five matches overall, and this bodes well for his chances of making the Dutch team in South Africa this summer.
Man City
This game with Liverpool interrupts a little series that Man City has with Stoke City right now, as they have drawn Stoke 1-1 in back-to-back games in the FA Cup and the Premiership. Man City’s high-priced defense hasn’t kept many clean sheets this year, and the duo of Kolo Toure and Jolean Lescott has had their problems as of late. Up front, Emmanuel Adebayor is still looking for a consistent strike partner, and you have to think that Carlos Tevez is the most likely candidate. Man City could also be without Patrick Vieira, who may be suspended after kicking out at a Stoke player.
Outlook and Pick
Man City are the home favorites in your sportsbook at +158, while Liverpool is listed at +203, and a draw comes in at +232. They haven’t had much success against the Reds lately, losing five and drawing four of their last 10 meetings against Liverpool, but they did manage a 2-2 draw at Anfield back in November. Man City has been brilliant at home this season with an unbeaten record of 9-3-0 so far, while Liverpool is 4-3-6 away from Anfield. Their major problem is an ability to score on the road, as just 12 of their 43 goals have come outside of Anfield. They need Gerrard to pull the team together, because they’re not going to go very far with Kuyt as their main attacking threat, no matter how well their defense is playing. Man City has a lot more depth than Liverpool, so they can deal with injuries and poor form better, and they have enough scoring options to snatch a couple of goals against Liverpool.
