PostHeaderIcon Can Terry Bridge the wide gap he has created?

With all of the focus this week states side being on the Super Bowl odds and the last week of NFL picks, there are some big happenings across the pond in some European Football.

The big story that has rocked the soccer landscape takes place in Great Britain on the Premier League’s top team, Chelsea. Captain John Terry has been publically humiliated in a Tiger Woods-esque way in England when it was revealed that he had been having an affair with fellow defenseman and teammate Wayne Bridge’s wife. Terry’s wife and Bridge’s wife were good friends and the backlash has reached crazy proportions across the sea even though Bridge was traded almost a year ago.

The Media has chastised Terry and is calling him to relinquish the captaincy of England’s World Cup squad for this summer. English fans have been relentless in booing Terry and even Chelsea fans have turned on their leader. Terry is still an elite defenseman in the Premier League and Bridge was traded to Manchester City as this ordeal forced Bridge to want obviously wanted off the squad. A court injunction about the complaint has been made public as a judge ruled that Terry was just worried about losing sponsorship money and felt the public should know. Terry was recently named “Father of the Year” to make matters worse.

Terry is just another in a long line of athletes that have been womanizers. He is not the first in a line of teammates sleeping with other teammates’ wives or girlfriends, but never in any of those cases has it ended well. Sleeping with a teammate’s wife is a line that is rarely crossed. Terry has indeed suffered a loss of sponsors and his popularity is at an all-time low. He deserves a lot of it, and Terry has lost millions because of it, along with the public shame that he gets from fans on every road game, and even at home games.

Terry and Bridge are both on the England national team and it will be a wonder how they co-exist. The United States has England in its pool for the first round of World Cup play this year, and the ever improving state of U.S. soccer may now have a British implosion to reap the benefits of.

This is a big deal and a historic scumbag move by England’s captain. He will never live this one down, but may relish in the bad boy role if he is smart. If you think what Tiger Woods did was bad, go and read all the details about the best team in the Premier League’s top defender. There really isn’t much worse you can do to a teammate, let alone someone who you called a friend. Bridge has since left his now former wife and has been a star for Manchester City.

5dimes review: On February 27th, Chelsea and Man City will meet in Chelsea. It will be an interesting to see what kind of revenge Bridge’s teammates’ will seek on Terry. And they should, because that’s what a teammate and friend does.
