There is plenty of soccer action still going on this winter as the top flight of leagues in Europe continue their play, and tournament play continues this week. The English Premiership is off this weekend but returns midweek for a very exciting matchup as surging Tottenham Hotspur host opportunistic Everton.

Tottenham has quietly moved into third place in the table behind powerhouses Manchester City and Manchester United. Through 19 games they have 13 victories, three draws, and only three losses, and have earned 42 points on the season. They have one game in hand on the clubs around them, and three points in a victory would put them at 45 points in a tie with United and one victory behind City.

To do so they must beat Everton, a club that has struggled recently and fallen to the bottom half of the table at 11th. They have seven wins on the season but three draws to go with nine losses, and their 24 points put them in the middle of a bunch of clubs. With a great chance to move ahead of several teams, Everton fell at home to lowly Bolton, losing 2-1 despite getting a surprise score from goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Everton have a tough task ahead of them as Tottenham have not been beaten in five straight games, and have not lost at home in eight games. Their only home blemish was their opener against Manchester City. What’s more, they have only one draw at home, and have outscored their opponents by an 18-8 margin while playing in front of their home fans.

Still, on the road this season Everton has played well, winning four times, drawing once, and losing four. They have scored 10 goals while allowing 10, and should play Hotspur close. The recent loss was the first time in nine games that Everton allowed more than one goal. Their problem, however, is that they have not scored more than one goal in six games.

Betting lines: Tottenham Hotspur is the favourite as well they should be. They have been rising fast of late and playing strong defensively. They have struggled against the best teams in the league, but do away with the clubs they should beat. Everton is one of those clubs, and Tottenham will play to victory, winning 2-0.
