The sportsbook is full of exciting action this month as the NHL and NBA head towards the playoffs, baseball and nearing opening day, and March Madness betting is all the rage.
While basketball is the big event these days in the United States, across the Atlantic in England soccer action is heating up as the English Premiership heads towards an exciting finish.
While Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal run away with the league and compete for the top spot, an intense competition is taking place at the bottom of the table as several teams fight to avoid relegation in the final three positions. Burnley travels to DW Stadium to take on Wigan Athletic as both teams look to separate themselves from the bottom of the Premiership.
Burnley currently sits in the final relegation spot with 24 points, but a victory on the road could put them in a tie with Wolverhampton and West Ham United. Wigan has slightly more comfort room positioned with 28 points, but a loss to Burnley would threaten their stay in the English League.
Much is on the line for both teams, with Wigan in fear of dropping their third straight match. A 4-0 rout by Bolton was followed by a disappointing home loss to Aston Villa that saw Wigan score a sore own goal to help the Villains.
A 1-0 home victory over Liverpool is the club’s only win in 10 English league matches. Moreover, they have had great deal of struggle scoring, netting only five goals in those 10 games.
Burnley too has played poorly of late, having not won a game in their last six matches. It is a sad stretch of which the club only earned a single point. The Clarets are seem to be facing troubles off the field, as rumours swirl around the future of manager Brian Laws. Newspapers have claimed Laws will be fired at the end of the season, a claim that has been refuted by the team and ignored by Laws.
This is the second match between these two inconsistent clubs this year, with Burnley losing at home 3-1 back in October.
Pick:
Burnley will be playing desperate football searching for their first win in six matches. Winning on the road will not be a simple task. The pressure will be on Wigan to deliver a home victory and separate themselves from the relegation zone against a team at the bottom of the table. Look for Burnley to sit back and wait for their opportunities. Despite their struggles, the offense has been adequate and will give the club a chance for a rare road victory. Look for Burnley to deliver the upset with a victory and keep the table positions close.
