Soccer action has returned to Europe as the top leagues begun another exciting campaign this season, with the English Premiership and other top tier groups getting underway. Meanwhile, in the states, Major League Soccer action is nearing the playoffs, as teams scramble for points and jockey for positioning atop the table.
This week features some highly anticipated matches, including a game between the two top teams in the eastern conference, as Sporting Kansas City hosts the Chicago Fire with first place on the line.
Sporting Kansas City has maintained their first place position in the east for some time now, but there are teams closing in looking to knock off the top club. Kansas City has 16 wins and seven draws on the year, earning 55 points this season with just six more matches to go. Right behind them, however, is Chicago with 16 wins and five draws, just two points back. Chicago, however, has one more game in hand, putting the pressure on Kansas City at home this weekend.
Kansas City returns home after a pair of matches on the road, as they beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 and followed that up with a 0-0 draw at Montreal. Kansas City has been great at home this year, just losing three matches while winning eight, outscoring their opponents 18-11 in the process.
The Chicago Fire, meanwhile, have been streaking, winning three in a row, beating Toronto, Montreal, and Columbus. They are not as good on the road as they are at home, having lost six times this year away from Chicago. The match features two of the most defensive teams in the conference, with Kansas City having only allowed 25 goals all year in 30 matches. Philadelphia is second with 33, and in third place is Chicago with just 34.
Still, Kansas City struggles at times to score goals, and is sixth in scoring in the conference.
Betting lines: Kansas City is at home, and they are rightly the favourites. Still, their home field is advantage is not what it is to other teams and not what it has been. Chicago plays great defense and will provide a great opponent for Kansas City. This one ends in a scoreless draw, as neither team can break away from the pack.
