Soccer action has returned to Europe as the top leagues begun another exciting campaign this season, with the English Premiership and other top tier groups getting underway. Meanwhile, in the states, Major League Soccer action is nearing the playoffs, as teams scramble for points and jockey for positioning atop the table.

This Saturday showcases a slew of intriguing matches, including one featuring a pair of eastern conference clubs with high playoff aspirations, as the New York Red Bulls host the Columbus Crew with both teams looking for three points and a spot closer to first place.

The New York Red Bulls have fallen back to third position in the east with 13 wins and 46 points, just a point behind second place Chicago Fire and only four back of first place Sporting Kansas City. The table stays tight behind New York, as Houston in fourth place has 45 points, and the Columbus Crew in fifth have 42.

The Crew will need to secure a tough road victory in order to stay in the playoff hunt, and cannot afford a loss to a playoff rival. After a string of four straight victories that saw Columbus move up the table closer to first, the Crew lost at New England by a 2-0 score. They stay on the road and look to avoid losing two straight to a New York club that is strong at home.

The Red Bulls are one of two teams left in the league that have yet to lose at home. They have nine wins and three draws, allowing 12 goals in 12 games while scoring 27. The Crew, meanwhile, have four wins and four draws on the road to go with six losses, while being outscored 12-15.

New York returns home after a pair of tough road games against playoff rivals, earning two draws against DC United and Kansas City. They have won their last four home games, outscoring opponents 8-2 in that span. They have seven matches left this year, and will play five of them at home.

The two clubs met earlier in the season at Columbus, with the Red Bulls triumphing 4-1.

Betting lines: At home, the Red Bulls are the clear favourite and rightly so. They are excellent at home, and a better defensive club that Columbus. The Crew will be desperate, but won’t have enough to secure a point. New York wins, 2-0.
