Soccer action has returned to Europe as the top leagues begun another exciting campaign this season, with the English Premiership and other top tier groups getting underway. Meanwhile, in the states, Major League Soccer action is nearing the playoffs, as teams scramble for points and jockey for positioning atop the table.
This week features some highly anticipated matches, including a battle between two of the best teams in the eastern conference, as the New York Red Bulls host Sporting Kansas City in what could be a play preview.
The New York Red Bulls have fallen into third position in the east with 14 wins and 49 points, just a point behind second place Chicago Fire and now only two points behind the first place team in Sporting Kansas City. All the clubs have played 28 games, and have only three left in the season.
The Red Bulls are one of two teams left in the league that have yet to lose at home. They have ten wins and three draws, allowing 13 goals while scoring an astounding 30. Kansas City, meanwhile, will take to the road looking for their eighth win of the year on the road while avoiding their fifth road loss. Away from home they have outscored their opponents by a 17-14 margin.
New York stays at home after beating the Columbus Crew 3-1. They have won their last five home games, outscoring opponents 11-3 in that span. They have six matches left this year, and will play four of them at home.
Kansas City has only scored 35 goals this season, but have allowed a league low 25 goals against. New York Red Bulls, meanwhile, are the highest scoring team in the east, netting 49 goals for, but allowing 40 against.
The two clubs played just a couple weeks ago and finished in a 1-1 draw.
Betting lines: At home, the Red Bulls are the clear favourite and rightly so. They are excellent at home, and Kansas City has had trouble scoring on the road at times. Still, the New York defense is weak and the Kansas City backend is strong. Look for a low scoring affair, as Kansas City and New York play to a 1-1 draw and keep the conference tight.
